Time is indifferent. Life is limited. Death Clock is a serial NFT reminder of the impermanence of human life. Your age, gender, screen time, and other data become your expiration date. Measured on the blockchain and counting down to zero, your personal Death Clock NFT estimates how much time you have left on Earth and stores your date and time of death on-chain.

Death Clock NFTs can be bought and sold, but with each transfer the clock is reborn and the reseller receives a new soulbound NFT for life.

From the capitalist commodification of time, to transness, climate change and raving the pain away, in this inaugural essay commissioned by Death Clock, theorist McKenzie Wark muses on the death-related anxieties of our time. McKenzie Wark is the author of A Hacker Manifesto, Gamer Theory, and Capital Is Dead: Is This Something Worse? among other books and is a Professor of Media and Culture at the New School in NYC.


When I changed the hormones that my body runs on, I changed the probabilities of the things that are likely to kill me. At least that was my takeaway from talking to the second doctor with whom I met to prescribe them. (Let’s not talk about the first one).

The second doc was pretty matter-of-fact about it. I was increasing my risk of breast cancer. Well yeah, because I grew breasts. It also seems like people whose bodies run on higher levels of estrogen might get more autoimmune diseases. On the other hand, I might be lowering my risk of prostate cancer and heart disease. These were guesses, though. Nobody knows all that much about transsexual bodies. We’re not part of anyone’s calculations. In some ways that feels freeing.
